Use your ID or HC/SWCD ID to checkout items. Electronic items may require your signature on a liability agreement.
Overview of laptop borrowing policy:
The laptop loan period is 7 days and items must be returned at least one hour prior to closing on the due date. Students will receive a reminder email 2 days prior to the due date. Students must return the laptop and power cord. Devices will be inspected for damage upon their return. If a laptop is damaged, lost, or stolen while checked out, the student will be responsible for the repair or replacement of that laptop. Laptops and/or laptop accessories that are damaged, lost, or stolen while checked out may result in replacement costs of up to $1,000.
Students may request to renew the laptop for another 7 days only after they have returned it to the library for inspection.
Failure to return the laptop by the due date will result in an overdue fee of $5.00 per day and a hold placed on the student’s account.
The libraries are not responsible for the recovery of any data that is left on a device when returned. The borrower must back up and remove any files they wish to keep.
Laptop use is for academic purposes only. Borrowers may not alter a laptop’s operating system as it is currently installed or alter any system settings that may leave the laptop vulnerable to security risks. Borrowers may not knowingly download or install malicious software or code onto the laptop.
Full policy with liability agreement sheet:
Renewals for laptops must be made in person and the student must bring in the laptop and charger cord before renewing.
Renewals for books can be made online, in person, over the phone, or via email. Books can be renewed twice unless a hold has been placed by another patron. Students can renew their checked out materials online by logging in to their KOHA account. Please use KOHA's listed login instructions.
Books - cost of the lost book plus a $5.00 processing fee
Laptops - cost of the laptop plus a $5.00 processing fee
Failure to return materials or pay the fee will result in loss of library privileges and the placing of holds on student accounts and services.
All Howard College and SCWD libraries house computers, printers, scanners, and webcams.
Your campus library may also checkout calculators, document cameras, headphones, or other items.

Instructors may arrange for the librarian to teach library research classes, including general group tours, individual instructional sessions, or subject specific library research classes. The subject specific classes are tailored to the needs of individual faculty and their courses. Classes are scheduled, if possible, at least a week in advance to allow for preparation and classroom availability. Book a session below:
Print Reserves
Print reserves at the HC Library serve faculty and students by allowing easy access to items of anticipated high use. Materials in these collections are assigned shortened loan periods and typically allow for in-house use only. Items that may be placed on reserve are library-owned books, personal copies of books, book chapters, copies of articles, class notes, or syllabi. Materials placed on reserve by HC faculty are available at the library's Information Desk.
To place an item on hold, contact your campus library.
Electronic Reserves
Instructors may also place items on Electronic Reserves by sending an email including the attached item that is to be placed on reserve to the Online Library Services account (onlineservices@howardcollege.edu).
Items that may be placed on Electronic Reserves are links to Internet sites, scanned copies of articles from periodicals, class notes, syllabi, PowerPoint files, and Word documents. You may also send a link to an article from a library online database for placement on eReserves (useful if you are not utilizing Blackboard in your course as supplementation). Electronic Reserves can (and usually should) be restricted to students enrolled in a particular course.
Please note that the individual instructor is responsible for complying with copyright and fair use laws, including recent court rulings. When in doubt, it is a good idea to contact the author and/or publisher to request permission to use the material for class purposes.
The library offers a variety of online content that may be linked to Blackboard including Research Guides, articles, and Ebooks. Click an option below to find instructions on how to add links for:
