Resources for Teaching Online

This guide offers videos, links, and literature to help HC faculty incorporate library resources in their Blackboard courses. It also provides information about other useful software to enhance the online learning experience.

How to Use this Guide

This guide is intended for Howard College and SWCD faculty.

This page offers brief explanations of why information literacy is important and a few ways you can offer direct library access to your students from your Blackboard course.

Pages under the "Databases" tab each address a specific database. These pages offer an overview of the database, a link to the database, and instructions and videos for  embedding or adding LTI links to information or videos from those databases.

The remaining pages of this guide provide links to HC resources and some other fantastic tools for distance learning.

Offering Library Services to Students in Blackboard

Why Libraries are Important

Offering Library Services to Students in Blackboard

Embed a librarian Instructors can add a librarian in Blackboard, create a discussion board where students can ask the librarian questions, and the librarian will monitor that discussion board.

Embed a digital reserves shelf A librarian can help instructors create a reserves list for eBooks. That list can be housed in the library's research guides and librarians can provide instructors with embed codes to embed the lists in Blackboard.  (See an example of a digital reserves shelf here.)

Add a quick link Add a link in Blackboard. This can link to the library's homepage or to a research guide developed for your course.

Ask about research guides  A librarian can create a research guide for subjects or individual courses. Instructors can then add a quick link to a guide from Blackboard.
